Crossing continents: Successfully moving executives from one region of the world to another

Companies find greater success moving executives overseas if they first screen candidates for competencies that indicate they will thrive in the unfamiliar environment. Attending to family needs before and after an international move can also pay dividends in terms of retention in the new post and effectiveness in the new job.

Prior to his current position, Mr. Vardy served as managing partner of another leading global search firm, heading the U.K. business. Additionally, he was also the global/European leader of the firm’s technology, media & telecommunications practice for ten years.

Mr. Vardy has conducted executive searches and succession planning projects for CEOs in the U.K., Continental Europe, the Middle East, South Africa, the U.S., Canada, Australia/New Zealand and Southeast Asia.

He also has led many searches for chairmen and non-executive board members of both large public corporations and pre-IPO, venture capital or private equity-backed businesses, where he is often called upon to give advice based on his in-depth experience with corporate governance and leadership structures.

Before entering executive search, Mr. Vardy spent ten years with British Telecommunications in the U.K. and the U.S. as executive vice president of British Telecom Inc. in New York, group director of corporate strategy, and managing director of cable television and broadband services.

Earlier in his career, he was a corporate financial analyst for the U.K. Post Office Corporation, working on the spin-off and IPO of their telecoms business and the establishment of the U.K. telecoms regulatory regime. Previously, Mr. Vardy was a systems analyst and project manager for Systemes Informatiques et Analytiques, a French-owned IT services company.

He is a member of the U.K. Committee of the Global Association of Executive Search Consultants.

Mr. Vardy is a psychology graduate with a master’s degree in business administration from the London Business School. He is a chartered management accountant and a fellow of the U.K.’s Royal Society of Arts.

Ms. Aureli specialises in assignments with a European and global scope, appointing board-level and head of function executives in the fields of IT services, software and emerging technology, voice/data communications, as well as information systems assignments across all industries.

Prior to joining Korn/Ferry in 1998, Ms. Aureli worked with another international executive search firm based in London and Paris.

Before entering the search profession, Ms. Aureli worked for a Japanese/American trading company, where she was responsible for business development throughout Southern Europe and implementing marketing strategies across the EMEA region. She lived in North America and Japan during this time.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Aureli worked in marketing and advertising at American Express and Young & Rubicam. She practiced law for two years following graduation.

Ms. Aureli obtained an honours degree in law at “La Sapienza” University in Rome. She speaks English, French and Italian.
