From CFO to CEO: A Pathway to Leadership

Michael Keevy

If the most highly scrutinized executive role is that of the CEO then, arguably, the role of the CFO runs a close second. CFOs are significant contributors to the success of organizations, and many go on to be CEOs. But does experience as a CFO provide the necessary training to be a CEO?

To find the answer Korn/Ferry International discussed the issue with executives with intimate knowledge: 12 leading Australian chief executives and directors who spent years as a CFO on their pathways to leadership.

From their perspective as former CFOs, the 12 executives shared their insight into what the role is, and needs to be, to prepare for the step up to CEO. They also shared personal reflections on their experiences when they transitioned to the vastly more complex and higher profile role.

The resulting report, From CFO to CEO: A pathway to leadership offers sound guidance to CFOs with aspirations to be CEOs, and insight into what CEOs and directors expect of their CFO.

We trust our report provides you with insiders’ perspectives on the CFO role and we welcome an opportunity to discuss the issues raised.
